Revealed! 2011 Jeep Phoenix Based On Fiat Panda 4x4!
93
Revealed! The 2011 Jeep Phoenix 4x4, a remarkable 1.3 litre, 5 door, four wheel drive mini-Jeep that is going to take the North American market by storm, while still getting almost 59 mpg!
Based on the Fiat Panda Cross 4x4, the Jeep Phoenix is simply rebadged, but completely suited to North American offroad conditions. It is also an exceptional city car that gets far higher mpg than any hybrid on the market, including the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. And all that with a conventional gasoline engine with no hybrid technology anywhere!
The new Jeep is very aptly named Phoenix as it is the type of vehicle that will allow Jeep to arise magically from the ashes of the devastated Chrysler. Just days away from what may be the last days of Chrysler, it is important to note that there are virtually no scenarios that allow for the Jeep brand to disappear from the face of the Earth. For many years, Jeep has been the most powerful brand in the Chrysler lineup and it is effectively inconceivable that Jeep will not continue in one way or another even in the death throes of Chrysler: Perhaps as a standalone brand, or maybe as a brand belonging to another major automotive manufacturer
The Panda / Phoenix 4x4 is definitely the way of the future for Jeep. It's a small, incredibly economical and thrifty car that can go anywhere. Yes, its barely 1.3 litre engine would make it the smallest displacement automobile currently sold in the USA with only the Smart Car having a tinier engine, but the Panda / Phoenix delivers. It can very comfortably cruise at highway speeds and the powerplant contains enough grunt to take the little mini-Jeep up frighteningly steep inclines.
With an innovative four wheel drive system which is engaged by viscous coupling with two Electronic Locking Differentials that cut in below 20 mph to brake wheels that find themselves without grip and slipping and proceed to transfer torque to the other wheels, the Panda / Phoenix 4x4 can handle anything the street or the dirt can throw at it.
Here are some specs for the Panda/Phoenix 4x4:

Yes, of course, there is no such thing as the 2011 Jeep Phoenix. Not yet anyway. However, this Hub goes to show how there is no need for extensive redesigning and reskinning of some of the best Fiat models. They can go on sale right away, without having to be extensively modified in any way other than to meet North American safety and emissions regulations!
I've driven a Panda for thousands of miles in Europe and can assure anyone that it is a spectacularly capable car, with ridiculous amounts of room considering the overall size of the vehicle, and more than powerful enough to shred any highway speed limit in North America. It is nothing short of an amazing small car and when dressed up in Phoenix 4x4 garb it will make an astounding, proper, suitable, and extremely welcome economy addition to the Jeep lineup.
I'd buy one as soon as they hit the showrooms. They may not be Chrysler showrooms, but there will be some dealer network somewhere that will carry this exceptional mini 4x4 onroad/offroad great city car!

I am just not into the look of the vehicle. Jeep is getting so far away from that unique durable 4x4 and starting to look just like everyone else. The Wrangler which I have owned one of for 20 years is getting to be all plastic. And the Cherokee Classic which was a great all around family car was discontinued. No wonder they are going bankrupt!
great car!!!!!!!!!
The panda cross does not have a gasoline engine..its a Turbo diesel which is why it gets such good mileage and has the power to get up steep angles.
Oh and another thing 54bhp is the power rating for the 1.1 litre petrol which is not available in the Panda Cross the 1.3 diesel is 73bhp
The Jeeps sold in Australia have included some real lemon models, I will be interested to see the Fiat marriage.
nice car, great and enjoy to drive.thanks for article.
Great concept! Don't think of it as a replacement for the Wrangler. Think of it as a new choice for people who want to throw a canoe or kayak on top of a vehicle with ground clearance and good gas mileage. Everyone raves about the Honda Fit. Try driving that ground hugger down a rutted gravel road to a trail head. The Fit drags in the icy ruts we get in the Midwest. I don't need a rough, tough Jeep. Repeat: good gas mileage and ground clearance is missing in action here in the U.S. Need a better idea? Build it at the Fenton, MO assembly plant. (No, I don't know anyone who works there. I just know Fenton is a state-of-the art plant that is being shut down.) If the price is as low as I've seen on the net and it is made in the USA, this little gem will sell like hotcakes. Bring it on - the sooner the better! Where can I sign up for one?
nice car.
This hub is pure genius! I like how you created this and car sites picked it up as if it's totally legit! Great work on the photos and the concept.
what a nice car!
its so cute!! jeeps=love?
im sorry but wat do any of u c in this sorry excuse 4 a jeep it looks like a smart car suv type thing from the bac and from the dirrect front it isnt 2 bad but the hood and front fender lines should be more straight and flat distinguishing that it is in fact a jeep by looks and not just badging and the distinct grill i also think fiat should die as a present company but i do like their older small compacts which are pretty cool i guess but fiat should be booted and the designers of this particular jeep deserve 2 b smacked and asked wat they were thinking
Nice reply Hal! This is a very cool design and well done for doing it! Must have taken you a while to complete it! Well done!
Looks sooooo real! Excellent work with Photoshop BTW!
LOL - Great hub and interesting comments. I got all sorts of shit for suggesting that American cars are nowhere near as fuel efficient as European cars. Gotta have the 9 liter muscle car apparently. "Till gas hits 5 bucks a gallon.
Had me going for a few minutes. Good stuff. I think more Americans will accept diesels than the car companies think.
Mark
You have some photoshop skills that thing looks flawless.
Great gas mileage! Styling reminds me of the early model Kia Sportage..or maybe it's a Mini. I hope we continue to see small crossovers that will offer good gas mileage. If there from the US's floundering auto manufacturers that's all the better. I hope they don't leave design out of the process.
OK, so this isn't what we expect from Jeep, or is it? The first Jeep was a government bid project and Ford built more of them than Willys did during WWII. Next, Kaiser took over and then AMC with financing from Renault and we got one of the best Jeeps every, the Cherokee. Daimler Benz has given great drive train support.
Maybe Jeep is vegetable soup of the auto industry. It's healthy, it contains lots of good stuff from all over and with the proper recipe and assembly cooks into an American favorite. Bring on the new Jeep Whatever and while they're at it, give this vechicle have an accessory package for towing behind a motorhome!
It's true. Jatco is used by Daimler Benz but it's really a Japanese product that was spun-off by Nissan and hooks up to the noisy, vibrating Mitsubishi motor. I wouldn't put ewither of these in a good soup just like I wouldn't put rabbit pellets in chocolate chip cookies. My Grand Cherokee Overland has a perfectly good Benz transmission. I have driven a Patriot with a CVT and it was "GAWDAWFUL." Get the right stuff put togeather the right way and Jeep will pull out of the Chrysler mess.
The Panda shown in the pics is the standard Panda Cross 4x4 for the European market.
The pics show the car on the Alps, and pic#5 should be rotated 45º, as grass doesn't grow sideways (LOL)
Someone mentioned the engines: in Europe you have two options, a 1200cc_62hp petrol (gasoline) and a 1272cc_72hp TDi, both with 5-speed manual gearbox as standard.
My assumption is that an auto tranny will NEVER be available and the FIAT 6-speed will not be even considered (pity).
My other assumption is that the 1400cc_74hp engine will make a better qualifier for the US model.
As for the price, at $10,500 it's astealm it retails at 19,000 Euro in Europe !!!
That's $26,000 !!! :^(
So, are there any Jeep designer-engineers reading this? If so, you know these pictures pop-up whenever you search Jeep Fiat Panda. Are you guys pinky-sworn to secrecy? Can you give us just a little bit of information on what's coming up?
Good fun Hal! The important distinction here folks is that the same "necessity" and "drive" that enabled the successful outsouring, collaboration, unbiased support and cooporation in the manufacture/design/etc of the old GPVs (JEEP Wranglers now), is the similar to what is needed today to make the brand and niche survive. JEEP is a decidedly American tradition, but it's also every bit the "vegetable soup" described in this hub. The FJ40 and the Defender/Commando are suitible rivals/allies as well.
I'm all for Fiat (Italians) rebuilding a Phoenix (GREAT name, by the way) with all of the ingenuity, cooporation, sweat, engineering, etc from all corners of the world. Chrysler/Fiat is what is NOW and the old thoughts and ideas will no longer propel this or any other badge.
And I'm one American who is not blind to the seeming coup de fet duping most of us into believing that the entire market is driven by anything aside from oil consumption/usage. Clean Air Act my foot! I drove a 1973 Honda CVCC that got AMAZING mileage and was cleaner than the fresh-driven snow. We should be doing anything we can to reinvent these companies by doing exactly what Hal and others here are saying.... take the best of all involved and let the pure goodness emerge from the ashes. Carlos, Dr. Z, Iacocca, Lutz all of them have to understand by this pooint that the consumers of the world aren't QUITE as stupid as they thing we are. Are we??? ;-)
Serengeti
NO WAY DONT DO IT!!! BOOOOOOOOO Embarrasment to the JEEP heritage! along with the Compass that is already in production! OUCH
"This is not just a paper 4x4. It can tackle angles that would leave a Jeep Patriot gasping. "
The front overhang appears to be way to big for it to start up that incline. It would just burrow the nose into the hill.
You guys gotta know that this is a terrible pastiche of Badge engineering you have on that image there. Thats nothing more than the Panda 4x4 with Trek cladding and a photoshoped Jeep Logo and grill.
That being said, I think that, if you look closely at the specifications of this vehicle, it has WAY MORE OFF ROAD CRED than you might think or even dare to give it credit for! With the appropriate Body type and the appropirate styling, it has some serious market potential if slotted below the Wrangler, people. After all, Jeep has been about practicality and purpouseful performance above all else. Think about it a bit before you just go and bash the possibility.
I believe in the this US brand and I also believe in Fiat's abilities. Both these companies have made mistakes in the past but its time to pick up the pieces and move on. Thats whats best for all of us!
This thing is so stupid. Jeep has to get back to its roots. I am a big Jeep enthusiast and this thing is blasphemy to Jeepers everywhere
EGG MOBILE!
TIN CAN O' DEATH.
I wouldn't be caught dead driving that thing. Ask the guy with the 30" tires on his patriot if it would "choke" on that angle.
Hal:
Your abilities in Photoshop are extraordinary! I wish I had the knowledge and capabilites you posess in that program.
As for the vehicle.... I am a big fan of Jeeps, and I am looking into buying one right now. That said, however, I also can say that the "Jeepish" Panda 4X4 you created DOES actually have appeal. If they were sold in the US and marketed by Jeep/Chrysler, I think I would seriously consider the vehicle.
Especially in the "Willy's Green & Tan" color scheme. :)
PipeTobacco
EWWWWWWWWW, what the h3ll is that? That is not a Jeep! I mean the front looks OK, like headlights, grill and what not, but from there to the back, its so ugly. It looks like a Smart Car and Old Jeep Liberty had sex and that ugly thing popped out. People like Jeep for its big masculine feel, this looks like a Jeep turned GAY!!!!!!!!!
Hi all, and hello to Hal Licino.
I know the Panda4x4 well, this is actually the *new* Panda, the previous version being an extremely boxy 3door hatchback with a live rear axle, old design from 1978...
For the record, although the Panda4x4 comes only with 1.2 gasoline and 1.3 TDi engines in Europe, the fwd Panda also has a 1.4 gasoline option, with either 75 or 100bhp variants.
So I wouldn't be surprised if the 2011 Jeep Phoenix actually came with a 1.4 liter 75hp engine, rather than a 60hp 1.2
Regards
For such a rugged company, that sure is a wimpy looking car! But for $10,500, I guess you can't ask for much.
Well I have to admit this thing is cool, and Fiat is not killing off Chrysler's real cars so what the heck. I have done my share to be green. I was driving my 1970 440+6 Challenger (I misunderstood Obama I thought he said 3 to 9 mpg not 39 mpg) now I drive a Challenger SRT8 it gets way better milage! I work in Afghanistan but driving one of these things down the US interstate now thats what I call dangerous.
Is there a good diesel on the board for - not only the Panda - but the Grand Cherokee as well?
guys just think now that fiat own Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and the Italian side like Alfaromeo, Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati. they will take the best of all makes and all cars will start to show the signs of that i mean look at the 8c alfaromeo it has alfaromeo design and a ferrari v8 engine. now fiat have a sporty v8 engine and a grunty hemi in their pocket now also the 5 pot diesels are great. the join will only make the american side better and the european side too. i own an alfa romeo and it says fiat on the chassis but its alfa romeo engineering and build it just has the fiat badge under the hood same as the ferrari but it does not make it any less of a ferrari. i think this panda cross is to get smaller engines into the us market as no american will buy a fiat panda as you only buy american yet in the uk the little alfa mito has a 1.4 turbo engine which produces 155.1 PS (153.0 bhp) (114.1 kW) and 230.0 Nm (170 ft·lb) (23.5 kgm) just think of the power they will get out of your hemi muscle. do any of you americans like the fiat 500 abarth.
Nice Hub
I'm impressed that it looks like it can off-road. That's pretty cool.
me too impressed. excellent jeep. you are excellent writer also.
I have one panda 4x4 with diesel engine in a mountain region. The small size is great to pass trough places where full size don't pass. It is not capable as an old pure 4x4, but it can outperform any SUV. In snow with snow tires (I never have to use chains) it's impressive, maybe is lightweight counts for that. The diesel motor is better than the petrol, diesels have more torque at low rpm for the same displacement and that is what you need in offroad.
In youtube there a lot of videos of the new Panda 4x4 where we can see it in the offroad environment.
Regarding gas millage, you must take in account that the 4X2 version has a very high gas millage compared with the 4x4 and some times what you see is the 4X2 numbers. Your figures seem to high. Don´t forget that is a permanent 4x4. Mine does 35 to 40MPG in average and in pure offroad the number goes down. But off course it is very good compared with 10 to 15MPG of larger 4x4 driving 4x4. But this is not a car to compare and to be used as a Grand Cherokee, but more like a Suzuki Jimny. It's a different market, for different needs in may opinion. Size don´t always matter.
Awesome. I would love to drive this raging machine.
I would love to own this one ...
I have the wrangle and just love it big jeep fan....
nice to meet you I'm mos thanks for good article. This is useful for me. I will come back again.
Jeeps are cool, I ended up with a dodge nitro though.
Gawd that's ugly. What Jeep owner would want to be associated with that!? Yuck.
js.
Thanks for the interest in the Panda 1.3L TD Cross, and good photoshop montage!. There is rumour that it will hit here (USA)in 2012. I'm in line if it does. This vehicle is so right for 99% of my traveling. I am not a fan of barge-like SUV's and I really enjoy the sense of freedom that a 40-60 MPG car gives you when traveling. The 4x4 feature is necessary as quite a bit of my work requires a snowcountry worthy vehicle. Everywhere I go seems to be 400 miles away; I really enjoy getting there on $20 bucks vs. $100. The Panda has about the same internal volume as my Scion xA, and I have never had a problem with space in that car. But the xA doesn't like snow or ice, so in winter I have to use my old Toyota 4x4 at 16mpg...
Does anyone know if the cvt2, second generation transmision in the 2020 compass is improved over the cvt that has been mentioned on this site.
Thank you
Tattooed
I work for Chrysler guys.......never count us out...watch this summer.....you will all be suprised!!!
Honestly, I think it's a really cool little concept, and might do pretty well if marketed properly. Then they could offer a sport model with a larger turbocharged motor, an upgraded suspension, wheels, some body pieces, etc.
Any new news on the Phoenix?Know if it's a definate yet?Hope so!!!
Very cool - hope to see them soon!
P.O.S. Fiat will ruin Jeep, needs to be owned by an American company!!
I do not want anyone who complains about the Compass to praise this. Actually, I don't want any Fiats and Jeeps to Mix. They will dilute the Jeep image.
Wait, I got me another idea. Instead of biulding tiny, uncapable Jeeps, lets put diesels and do more advertising. They do it in Europe and it is a success. Jeep should put out a truck brand like dodge's RAM. Afterall, the bestsellers still are the Ford F150 and Chevy Silverado.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yqTOunVNc8
This link shows the fiat as being quite capable wee motor, bigger heavy 4x4s struggled in the same hole...
LOL! IS This a joke awful car you would be dead if got into a car accident with a small design just like the Smart car should be called the dumb car what are the crash test ratings 1 star lol you guys crack me up JEEP is going in the wrong direction wimpy builds please JEEP take your skirt off!
SPAGHETTI JEEP
I love this! They finally got the memo when they put out the Patriot. But its still not enough! I want a gas saver but there is nothing out there that can go off road. Lets all Wake UP! Its a new world and it begs for modest cars with more gas efficiency until we can find another way, or we will die! Its inevitable, good job jeep. I will be buy this if it comes out for sure. I laugh inside every time I see a idiot in a Hummer or raised deluxe truck all by himself. I see a new era wear those are only available to contractors and those with more that 4 kids everyone else by law must have a 40+ mpg vehicle. Common Obama!
I owned in the last 20 years Cherokee and Grand Cherokee's for what I used it for basicly for Canadian Winters.Think this is great 4x4 for city peep's.What they should bring back is the Diesel grand cherokee. For the amount of Driiving I do a day savew more money then using gas. What's going on in the Golf of Mexico..with BP mostly people will try to get small trucks save gas all the enviroment crap the Panda/Jeep Phoenix is the way to go.
Awesome!!! I can't wait for this vehicle to come into production and be over here. Unlike many who comment and have no idea where they are coming from, I have family in Italy. I was in and drove my aunt's FIAT Panda. All I could say was that this car needs to come to America!!! It's affordable, cheap to run/own, has a 4x4 version, and hopefully will take many unnecessary MONSTER SUVs off the road.
WOW! If they come out with this it will dominate the sub-compact class. I just sold my 1995 hardtop 2 door Geo Tracker 4x4 & wished something like it was available. I need a car under 151" in length. No US car is made that short. I had to settle on a Toyota Yaris which is good, but I miss the height & 4x4. If something like this arrives I'll have to think about selling my Yaris & getting it!
Jeep has came out with some questionable trucks in the past year or so, but this isn’t worthy of having the jeep logo. It’s an insult. a couple of the posts I’ve read mentioned good gas mileage, economic, nice looking, ect... first of all if you want a rice burner buy a Honda or a fiat, Jeeps are not and have never been economic. I would love to see this POS go anywhere other than blacktop and the occasional dirt road. As far as the nice looking thing goes I don’t know what you consider a nice looking car is but this looks like a modern version of the gremlin. due to everyone that have not use for a 4x4 wanting a fuel efficient 4x4 Chrysler has completely ruined the jeep name and legend.
I tried a Panda but do not enter anything in the luggage racks
I want this car! As a current Cherokee owner, I can't wait for something smaller and more fuel efficient.
I would like to have of those vehicles please. :)
I thought as much. I'll settle for your bike, without the cat of course! :)
Minun mielestäni tuo on hieno.
Olisi hieno omistaa Jeep-merkkinen pikkuauto joka on nelivetoinen ja hyvä olisi jos sitä saisi automaattivaihteistolla.
Its terribly ugly, and to fit the "American Market" it will have to be a lemon with 1000 lbs of electronic nanny gadgets including tire inflators and seatbelt warnings, automatic choke and warm-up, electric windows and keyless entry, OnStar, and other douchebaggery, defeating the purpose of the light, utilitarian Panda car.
I miss the 1980's. Thats when Jeeps were trucks. Man, the 2010s are gonna suck.
see this panda cross modified in portugal:
http://www.fiatforum.com/panda/135416-panda-cross-
and a video
That is one ugly jeep, although the mpg is awesome!
Disappointing!! That this is imaginary. Detroit has been
10 years behind on six speeds and 30 years behind on limited slips, just now appearing, LONG OVERDUE, in Camaro and Mustang (this last with tiny 16 gal. tank).
I was about to call my Mopar dealer, even with the antique five speed. Detroit has no clue about economy.
I am not buying a 4WD that eats 12MPG to get across Kansas to a ghost town road, nor going off road into the
boonies with a Mickey Mouse transmission. Kia/Hyundai twins have a 6 speed BUT dropped 4WD!! STUPID! (and they have 4 choices among themselves) Since the Phoenix really
makes sense, Chrysler (nor Detroit) will never build it.
Great spoof, nice idea - hope it comes to reality for you guys in the US! I've owned numerous 4x4's over the years - Jeeps, Mercs, Land Rovers, Suzukis etc - I've raced them, trial-ed them used them on manouevres etc. I've owned a 'Jeep Phoenix' (Fiat Cross 1.3 diesel)for two months and it is a really impressive machine - gets all the places I need it to - muddy, rutted forest tracks, wet grass hillsides and doesn't cost a fortune to run - everything is lower - emissions/road tax, insurance, mpg, tyres, servicing etc! If I need extra stowage space I hook up a goods trailer. Its even OK on the motorways (around the (UK)legal limit. But whats this about $5/gallon? Here in the UK its about $8.5/(UK)gallon! The vehicle wasn't advertised or pushed very well here in the UK and I only found out about by chance. When I asked Fiat officials why? they said they didn't believe there was a strong market for it in the UK - the same happened previously with Renault Scenic RX 4x4! If common sense prevails you'll get it in the States but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Rugged and comfortable car for hcity, highway and rugged terrain.
This Dutchman has been driving with this amazing little car over 120.000 km in 2 years. A joy to drive, never let me down, dirt cheap and extremely durable. Nice to know that's been introduced to the US. Go for it!
We own a 2FWD Panda for 6 years now... and love it. The TurboDiesel nowadays cranks out 95 HP.
In a special testing day we could assist a professional 4wd-racer doing miracles in the 73HP-TuorboDiesel. For example climbing backwards a 100% slope... frightfull. But the little Panda pulled it off. And being able to pass between to trees, where other SUV's would get stuck and its sturdieness make it really go everywhere.
A pity that so far no plans in that direction have been announced.
The jeep is too small for my eyes but I must admit, the design is appealing!
nice car, thanks to article

It's amazing just how thinly disguised this Fiat Panda is. Hope it sells.
